Today's town was created on 01.01.1975 as part of the municipal reorganization. However, the history of the town goes back to the time of Charlemagne. Obermarsberg's historical sites still bear witness to the town's extraordinary historical significance. But it's not just the historical sites that invite you to visit Marsberg, but also its scenic location. The "Eggegebirge" and "Diemelsee" nature parks are rewarding hiking areas with varied forests and landscapes. Diemelsee, which is located in the town area, is an attraction for many water sports enthusiasts.

Since the municipal reorganization, the town of Marsberg has consisted of 17 districts ( Bredelar, Borntosten, Canstein, Erlinghausen, Essentho, Giershagen, Heddinghausen, Helminghausen, Leitmar, Meerhof, Niedermarsberg, Obermarsberg, Oesdorf, Padberg, Udorf and Westheim).

Helminghausen is located at the extreme south-western tip of the urban area. Here, on the border between Hessen and North Rhine-Westphalia, the Hochsauerland with its wooded hills meets the Waldeck Upland. The terrain around the town rises quite steeply both to the north to Brandt and to the south to the 595 m high Eisenberg. Between mighty mountain cones lies the small, cozy district of Marsberg with just under 200 inhabitants directly on the natural lake in the Diemelsee Nature Park.

The small tourist village directly on Diemelsee was first mentioned in 1325 in a document from the Bredelar monastery. In ancient times, it was part of the Lordship of Padberg, which is why the coat of arms of the Knights of Padberg served as the model for the town's coat of arms.

The townscape of Helminghausen is characterized by tourism. In addition to vacation apartments and guesthouses, there is a campsite and a miniature golf course in the village. In the Diemeltal to the east of the village there is a village hall, a sports and playground and a youth campsite. To the west, the Diemelsee compensatory pond is directly adjacent to the village center. It is only 500 m from the village center to Diemelsee, which offers a wide range of tourist attractions all year round. The idyllic location below the dam wall of the Diemel dam invites you to relax and unwind: Hiking on premium hiking trails, cycling on signposted routes, a wide range of water sports and more.
